A Modest Proposal

According to yourdictionary.com

Ethos is an appeal to ethics, and it is a means of convincing someone of the character or credibility of the persuader.
Pathos is an appeal to emotion, and is a way of convincing an audience of an argument by creating an emotional response.
Logos is an appeal to logic, and is a way of persuading an audience by reason

ETHOS-
"As to my own part, having turned my thoughts for many years upon this important subject, and maturely weighed the several schemes of other projectors"
-Jonathan Swift not only came up with this "solution" he's thought of it for YEARS. That gives him some type of credibility. He's had all this time to change his mind, and he didn't.

PATHOS-
"It would increase the care and tenderness of mothers toward their children, when they were sure of a settlement for life to the poor babes, provided in some sort by the public, to their annual profit instead of expense."
-Maybe, this doesn't bring as much positive emotional appeal, but it sure brought out a little shock out of me- And I'm pretty sure that's what Swift wanted to do with this, bring out emotion to his readers-and that counts too. It gets worse, he then follows with this...

"We should see an honest emulation among the married women, which of them could bring the fattest child to the market."
-COULD YOU IMAGINE FEEDING BABIES JUST TO KILL THEM AND MAKE MONEY OFF OF THEM?! This reaction, I think is exactly what Swift wanted, people to be mad, or angry-especially parents of possible profitable pieces of meat.

LOGOS-
"For first, as I have already observed, it would greatly lessen the number of papists..."
"Secondly, The poorer tenants will have something valuable of their own..."
"Thirdly, Whereas the maintenance of an hundred thousand children, from two years old and upward, cannot be computed at less than ten shillings a-piece per annum..."
"Fourthly, The constant breeders, beside the gain of eight shillings sterling per annum by the sale of their children..."
-Swift goes all the way to six reasons. Even though these reasons give nightmares, they all end up being some what logical- such as the fourth reasoning that says parents won't have to spend all that money in raising a child, instead they will make a profit, WHO DOESN'T WANT/LIKE PROFIT?

This made me very grossed out but it also brought out many advantages. This was just a crying call for his country. He later says, he just wants his country to be better- "...advancing our trade, providing for infants, relieving the poor, and giving some pleasure to the rich."-all seeming very logical. He hit readers with very emotion wrenching and uncensored ways- LOGOS ETHOS PATHOS - to let citizens know their country was not doing good, and to wake them up to make changes, and what better way than to strike at citizens' most prized possessions, their children.

NO BABIES WERE HARMED IN THE WRITING OF THE MODEST PROPOSAL.

A Modest Proposal

In Jonathon Swift's Article, "A Modest Proposal" he uses pathos, ethos, and logos. The Irish were struggling a lot with the famine. He uses pathos to get really emotional when he is talking about the women's children. He then uses ethos to talk very seriously about the papists. He also uses logos to talk about the Catholic church. Swift used all three of these very effective way.

"A Modest Proposal"

In “A Modest Proposal,” Jonathan Swift talks about moms who have many children and having to live on the streets because they have no money. He starts off with pathos and is very emotional in the beginning.  Then he starts to get serious and talks about Papists in an ethos way. And starts stating the advantages to his proposal and why they are important. At the end he is making his opinion a big picture and using logos by saying how he desires politicians.

"A Modest Proposal" Pathos, Logos, and Ethos

This was a very hard time for the Irish and there is plenty of emotions that go with it. There was many struggles during the famine of Ireland. He gives a pensive sadness of Pathos with all of the people left out on the streets as bums, and all of the women that had sever children. Then there is Logos which is logical such as, when Swift talks about the Catholic Church. With the outbreak of the many Papists, that were their most dangerous enemies because they were financially loyal to the Catholic Church. Next is Ethos which is the era of 1729, which was the burden of raising children once they reached a year old.

Saving lives

In Jonathan Swift article "A Modest Proposal", Jonathan is using pathos to persuade his audience to take action. In the beginning of the article Swift is talking about his plan to help improve children lives who's parents are not of well of. Swift stated that"...it will prevent those voluntary abortions, and that horrid practice of women murdering their bastard children, alas, too frequent among us, sacrificing the poor innocent babes..." Swift is talking to the mothers and taping into their emotions of their children. Swift is also setting a fire to all pro-life people with their beliefs.

Judging Each Other

How would you feel if someone locked their door as you were simply walking by? When we first see someone we look at them to see if they are not sketchy to us. Grouping people can be helpful most of the time, but when done wrong you being to follow stereotypes towards people. In the article “Black Men and Public Space” he talks about how when he walked at night he saw how people were scared of him due to stereotypes. they would lock their car doors as he walks by. People would walk faster or even hold items closer to them so he would not take them. People made him out as a monster as he was just simply walking late at night. Stereotypes should not be a way to think of a person or a certain race. I feel like it holds us all down as people.

Judging a book by it cover

In "Black Men and Public Space", he tells us about how he likes to walk around at night to just reassure himself. but there are risks for him walking at night. He tells us his experiecnces walking at night and passing women who hold on to thier purse or lock their cars while he crosses the street, or simply have a look to get ready for the worst when they pass by him. These women see a Black Man walking at night and assume he's going to harm them. Although he stated that women are proned to be the main target of assults from a young black man at night, he understands why they act the way the do, they are vulnerable. It isnt good to stereotype someone because of something you were told. Although the sterotype may be right in some cases it isnt good to do so because it makes a person feel uncomfortable in their own skin.

Stereotypes

Although grouping people could help us can get an general idea or thought of who the person is, it can lead to misjudgement and misunderstanding. In the "Black Men and Public Space", a black man is the narrator. He tells us how he experienced a lot of people feeling fear around him. There are many terrible stereotypes on how African Americans go to jail, shot people, rape people, etc. Because of this, society has a bad impression on African Americans even though they are not bad. The narrator would simply walk down the street and people would just pick up there speed and walk faster because they are scared. Some people do fall into the stereotypes, however, some does not. It is not good to judge someone based on dumb stereotypes.

Size of the Solar System.

Humans are attracted to things that are challenging, and that makes life interesting. The size of the Solar system which is approximately 5 million kilometers has always been an attraction for humans. Based on the NASA, since the launch of the Apollo 11 mission on July 16, 1969, the universe has been of interesting for humans. This marked the beginning of a new era that showed that it was possible for humans to go into space. Neil Armstrong, Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin and Michael Collins were the astronauts on Apollo 11. The moon is approximately 384,400 km away from Earth, and it took them four days to land on the moon. Collins stayed in orbit around the moon. He did some experiments and took some pictures. Having this dream come true, added an enormous success in the story because even though the size of the solar system is immense, it does not seem to be an obstacle for humans anymore. After this first launch, different things have been done to continue discovering the solar system.

The Solar System is HUGE!

I don't know about everyone else but going through "If the moon were only 1 pixel" was tiring there were points where I just wanted to skip ahead to the end. And that animation is as accurate as you can get to just how big the solar system really is. I never really thought about the solar system before and how empty it is but wow there so much nothing in the universe its crazy once you start to really think about it and then here we are on planet earth billions of people on one tiny planet. It really can't just be us in the whole solar system right? I am sure we have all had that thought. Humanities role seems so small yet so big at the same time, it is because of the human race that we know there are other planets out there we have discovered so many things outside of our "comfort" zone and with all the technological advances we will continue to discover what lies beyond planet earth.

Humanity's role

Humans are a small speck in the universe. However, the that small speck has a large role to play in it. Humans are now exploring Earth's neighboring planets and space itself to find something new. Exploring and discovering new things are humanity's role in the universe. During the ice age, what we know as the native Americans, walked across the barren straight and explored the what we know as the Americas. Several hundred years later and more well know, Christopher Columbus sailed across the Atlantic sea to find a new path to India. However, Columbus founded the Americas and helped started the colonization of the new world. Humans are curious creatures and because of this discover new things. Humanity's role in this vast universe is to explore and discover new things that no one/nothing else has already discover.

Space exploration is one of humanities biggest steps in the world of technology. Not only does it symbolize how intellectual of a country we are it also shows a sense power. During that time everyone in the world was trying to get a man to the moon, nations literally spent millions if not billions of dollars and resources and whoever succeeded first was obviously the top dog amongst the other nations. So the reason we spent so much on space exploration was not only to say we were the first nation to get to the moon but also to say we were the  most intellectual, bravest, out going, powerful, and even daring nation in the world too; it was a huge statement of who was really the best.  Without this mark that we left in history we wouldn't be the same nation we are today.

If I had to send information to make other living things out there in space know why the we do so much for space exploration I would send a picture of human evolution. From cavemen to modern man. I would send this to show how here on earth we've developed, how we have changed. I would also send some kind of timeline, all showing some of the most powerful events that have happened here. Such as a picture of Neil Armstrong, and him planting our American Flag on the face of the moon. I would mark the picture with the date of the event. Another thing I  send is a picture of 9/11. I would maybe also send some type of podcast, with all the sounds going on that day. People crying, people screaming, sirens, running- with that the date.

These are some of the things I would send, to let them know why we invest so much into this program, The picture of 9/11 with the podcast- because we need detect aircraft that isn't in the right places. For protection, to prevent things like 9/11 to ever happen again. The picture of Neil Armstrong, to show our achievements, to show how we actually progress-not just NASA but most Americans. I would also send a Beatles Record just for pure enjoyment. :)

To Work Better, Work Less

What argment of the work do these two images have in common?

Well the imaage on page 172 in SWW shows what looks to be a dragon made of numbers and a man holding a pen trying to fight off the dragon. The title of the image is Busines is a series of battles. We make chariots. The images to me symbolizes what business is like everyday. Dealing with overwhemling amounts of work and numbers can outgrow you and consume you by working too much. This compares to the image on page 278 in SWW the We Can Do It! poster because it is telling women that they can be equal to men and work during world war II. Women were encourgaed by the seriousness in the womens face and how strong she looks by flexing her arm. The thing that they have in common is self pormotion. They uses images to get the viewers (us) to fall into their trap.

How do these ideas contrast with those presented in the article?

The ideas from the article state that if you work less you work better. And that is true. In the summer i worked almsot everyday and got only one to two days off, it was overwhelming and stressful but i did it because i needed to stay busy and make some money. After summer i only worked the weekends and i saw myself work much better and harder becasue during the week i had time to myself to relax and get siked for working friday, saturday and sunday. Having that break improves someone so deeply because they can focus on their own personal lives as well. The images from the book SWW differ from this artcle becasuse they use figurative language to sell products or encourage to work becasue its better for you. Over working is a neative effect on people becasue they tend to have less time to cae about their own heatlh.

Which of these concepts of work do you most agree with?

Personally I agree with the concept of working less to work better because i could relate to it in every way, i used to work almost 40 to 50 hours and it wasnt good. i got lazy and bought mostly fast food and i didnt work out at all, i could tell that it wasnt healthy for me tobe working so much. The time i have for myself befrore the weekend is special to me becasue when i get to work im all pumped and ready to go.

Some Lessons from the Assembly Line

I agree with the essay Some Lessons from the Assembly line because I think that when we are getting an education, it is because we want to have a better style of life. Getting a degree sometimes seems hard because there are some other circumstances that come along with it. For example, if people are working after school or whenever they are free, it can sometimes distract them from that process of getting a degree. We are getting an education because we want to be better persons and probably because of the job that we have now is something that we don’t want to do for the rest of our lives. Andrew Braaksma had this summer job that he said he didn’t like, but this was motivating him to study harder in school so he could get a better job later. We all go through these circumstances sometimes in our lives. We are doing something that we don’t want, but this job is bringing us a lesson: that to go wherever we want to go, we have to work hard and appreciate what we now have.
I disagree with Your Lifestyle has Already Been Designed because this essay just talks about getting money out of something. People are working because they are getting paid, but when that happens people tend to lose the motivation or enjoyment of working at something that they have decided to do for the rest of their lives.

Your Lifestyle Has Already Been Designed

I agree with  David Cain, our lifestyle has been designed for us. He writes about how different his life was when he was traveling the world with no source of income yet he was happier and he was able to go on without spending so much, compared to now that hes back to his 9-5 job with no free time but able to spend freely. By working 9-5 and getting a paycheck every 2 weeks he was careless with money because he knew it would be replenished which is what a lot of us do when we have a secure form of income we tend to spend without a care but when we know moneys tight it hurts to even spend 5 bucks on coffee. The argument about corporations and how they take a part in our spending's is true we tend to not need stuff but think that we do therefore we buy into what they are selling. The less free time we have the more we buy simply for convenience he says it keeps us unambitious outside of work which is true.

Why Education is so Important

We are very lucky to be able to have the chance of getting a higher education. Many people don't even have the chance to get a education which puts them straight in the work force. I agree with Andrew Braaksma when he says " Factory life has shown me what my future might have been like like I had never gone to college" I can relate to it because I'm thankful that I'm in college and not still doing the hard manual labor at my old job. Working from when school ends to 10 P.M and on weekends from 7 A.M to 10 P.M made me thankful that I am in college trying to get a degree so I don't have to do back breaking labor for the rest of my life. One day we will be out in the real world on our own, with the degree that we are stressing over will give us the ticket to not be the low man on the totem pole.
In "Your Lifestyle Has Already Been Designed" he pretty much talked about just talk about blowing money. These two articles are very different in the other article Andrew talked about how he worked hard for his money and in this one he said he had long days but never any hard labor. I believe that if people work hard for money they tend not to spend it as easy. Therefore, this is why I disagree with this article.

Lessons from the Assembly LIne

I believe that Andrew Braaksma "real world" is the true form. Not everyone can get the same type of education. In a third world or even a second world country an education is rare and those that do receive a education will have a better life. Students are also paying for their college/education so they should take advantage and use their education. Most American's don't even have to worry about not attending a college, just where they want to go for college. We should use the education we are getting to try to get a stable job with good job security. Also all jobs are not secure. With companies always competing with each other will cause some to either go into bankruptcy or just be force to fire some of their workers. Some companies will move to other country to get workers that will work for less money like, like with Braaksma said "...moved to Mexico, where people would work for 60 cents an hour." So companies may just even decide to go to another country to have workers work for even less than they pay you right now. Jobs are hard to obtain and a job is very easy to lose.

Effective Arguments

The Battle of the Ants- The narrator is describing a battle scene of two different kind of ants, “one red, the other much larger, nearly half an inch long, and black”.  The author has the narrator describing the “battle scene” of the ants as if it where a really battle the narrator was witnessing.  The author uses Achilles as the example of the battle, “The legions of these Myrmidons covered all the hills and vales in my woodyard”  the myrmidons were soldiers that followed Achilles in battle and he is describing the ants as Achilles soldiers.  The way the author uses these descriptions of relating the ant battle to Greek war is effective because it gives the reader a more descriptive insight of what the narrator is seeing and it makes you feel as if you are present.
Elephants Communicate in Sophisticated Sign Language-  I think that Joyce Poole description of the elephants is very effective.  The description of the Elephants wiggling their ears or shaking their heads gives off a playful and fun vibe. The elephants are, in the same way as humans, want attention and love and by “wiggling” they invite other elephants to play with them.

effectve arguments

The Battle of the Ants- Henry David Thoreau describes the two different ants as a battle and was explaining their actions as if it was really happening. He says “they fought with more pertinacity than bulldogs.” He is saying that aunts can make better decisions than bulldogs which I thought was very interesting. I see ants all the time trying to get food but I never imagine it as a full on battle. I disagree with his explanation, the ants were just trying to get food from the chip I could not see it as a battle. I feel like he was just imaging everything and making it up.

Elephants Communicate in Sophisticated Sign Language- Joyce Poole says that the elephants have a sense of humor, I agree. I see elephants as playful and wanting to have fun. The elephants would play with the researcher’s vehicle, act like the elephant was tripping but just wanted attention and play. The elephants know that they are funny and like to charm. In the videos it shows how baby elephants love to play with one another and also their mother. This article helped me understand elephants and what each movement means. Not only elephants are playful they are also very smart. Elephants have very good hearing so they can tell from miles if something threatening is coming and they could move away from danger to a safe place. This is a survival skill that they need and without it they would not be able to survive

effective arguements

The Battle of the Ants - In this story the narrator effectively describes the battle between two different kinds of ants. The author portrays the ant battle as if it were The battle of Bunker Hill. As if these different groups of ants were soldiers in a war that were fighting against each other. The red ants being one side and the black ants being the other. I thought that this was a very effective way to portray an event that the author is describing. Comparing something like that to a point in american history I thought was quite clever.

Elephants Communicate in Sophisticated Sign Language - I really liked the description of the elephant "strut" in males. With the ear wave and the head-toss and the chin-in. I believe that description is very effective because I think human males tend to have a sort of strut in them when feeling a heightened sexual feeling. I just believe this example related well to the human male.
